Since Prime Minister Ivica Racan resigned on Friday, after which
the entire government fell, the constitutional wheels have been put
in motion. The President of the Republic will next week assign a
prime minister designate who will assemble a new government.
The LS central committee decided to support the new government at
Saturday's session, and expressed readiness to take part in it,
under the condition that parties agree on the basic programme
stances.
DC vice-president Vesna Skare-Ozbolt told a news conference in
Rovinj today that the party did not support the 86 MPs who wish Racan
as the premier designate, because that would be "offering an old
solution which yielded no results".
The HDZ will not support the new government, nor will it participate
in any combinations for its assembly, because it believes that the
government has no perspective and will deepen the existing crisis
through a new battle for power, HDZ president Ivo Sanader said.
The party maintains that early elections are the only solution to
the crisis, since the coalition government will not have the
legitimacy without the Social Liberals (HSLS), considering the
fact that voters voted for an integral, not partial coalition,
Sanader said.
