PRIME MINISTER EXPRESSES DOUBT IN COALITION

ZAGREB, June 28 (Hina) - The conduct of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) is unacceptable and I cannot say anymore whether the Coalition of five farties still exists, Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan told journalists in the parliament where the heads of the five coalition parties met with party benches on Friday night.
#L# The meeting was convened after the parliament could not manage to obtain a quorum to take a vote on the ratification of an agreement on the Krsko nuclear power plant because opposition MPs and some HSLS MPs from the coalition left the parliament hall just prior to the vote being taken. HSLS President Drazen Budisa and party bench president Djurdja Adlesic left the meeting of the coalition almost an hour before other participants did. Budisa told journalists that it was clear to the HSLS that Croatia was faced with further negotiations with Slovenia over the Krsko issue, however, he did not wish to comment on the future of the coalition. Racan however, claimed that there was no point in continuing with the coalition if it was going to continue behaving in this manner. According to Racan it was necessary to wait until next Wednesday when the parliament is to reconvene before anything could be resolved. Commenting on the HSLS's behaviour in the parliament, Racan said that it was one thing to express one's opposition to an attitude, but it was another matter to not allow the coalition to function. Racan stressed that he did not accept a coalition that would resolve problems which would not exist if it were not for the coalition. He added that he made this comment because he expected the coalition to be involved with problems of citizens and not its own problems. He denied allegations that he was considering resigning due to the situation that arose in the parliament during the day. Asked whether a vote of confidence would be taken on the government or whether he would call for an election, Racan said that it was necessary to wait for that answer. (hina) sp sb
