Speaking at a news conference, Racan said the government described
his visit to the US as significant and added that political,
economic and security cooperation would be discussed during
bilateral talks with US senior officials.
During the stay in New York and talks with UN Secretary-General Kofi
Annan and other UN senior officials, numerous multilateral issues
will be discussed and the Croatian delegation will use this
opportunity to point to the security issue of Prevlaka, Racan
said.
Also scheduled to take place is a working lunch with
representatives of US companies. The lunch, organised by the US
Chamber of Trade, will contribute to the strengthening of the two
countries' bilateral relations, Racan said.
Addressing regional cooperation, Racan said he supported Croatia's
regional cooperation because it is in its interest to have a stable
atmosphere.
Speaking of relations with Slovenia, Racan said problems should be
solved in a responsible manner, through direct contacts. If the two
countries fail to find a solution, the issue should be solved with
the help of international arbitration, Racan said.
Racan positively assessed the joint statement by Croatian
President Stjepan Mesic and his Yugoslav counterpart Vojislav
Kostunica. He said the statement should be viewed as a part of
efforts invested in improving relations with Yugoslavia, which has
to be supported.
He said that the liberalisation of visa regime with the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia was already included in signed agreements.
He, however, said that one should not expect the cancellation of
visa regime to take place immediately.
Speaking of the forthcoming election in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Racan
called on Croats to go to the polls and strengthen their own
position as one of the three constituent peoples in the country.
