BELGRADE, June 14 (Hina) - The Hague war crimes tribunal's deputy
chief prosecutor, Graham Blewitt, said on Friday he had requested
Yugoslav officials to urgently extradite the remaining 18
indictees from a list of 24 people charged with war crimes. #L#
Ten people on the list could be included in trials which are about to
begin if they were arrested quickly, Blewitt said in Belgrade at a
round table on Yugoslavia's cooperation with the UN tribunal.
Blewitt confirmed that during his talks with two ministers in
Belgrade he had urged them to do everything so that the accused
might be arrested or surrender to the Hague tribunal, whether they
are in Serbia or not.
Sljivancanin and Radic are two of those ten who could be included in
trials at once as Mile Mrksic is already in The Hague, said Blewitt,
adding that the tribunal would like to organise a joint trial for
the three of them.
The deputy chief prosecutor said the possibility of trying Hague
indictees in Serbia was unlikely, particularly given that such
trials are very difficult due to political involvement. These
people have to be brought to justice and not returned to local
courts, he said.
