Tomcic on Monday expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that
relations with Slovenia had reached such a low level. #L#
He expressed his personal dissatisfaction because of the very, very
low level of relations with Slovenia, responding to a question of
future relations with that neighbouring country seeing that the
parliament had opposed to confirm an agreement on the Krsko nuclear
power plant while an initialled agreement on borders had actually
been taken off the agenda.
Tomcic reminded that there were in fact three contentious issues
between the two countries - Krsko, the issue of demarcation -
particularly on the sea, and the issue of Ljubljanska Bank.
"I believe that these issues should not be discussed in a package
deal but each should be treated individually," Tomcic said and
added that the two governments should try to reach an agreement.
Tomcic considers the issue of demarcation to be the most serious
problem and that the current agreement is not fair towards Croatia.
A solution can and must be found that will be acceptable to both
sides and not only the negotiators but the public from both
countries should be included.
It's obvious that we made a mistake in Croatia. The Slovenian
government immediately informed their public of all the elements
contained in the agreement whereas the Croatian side only did so
when the agreement was already initialled, Tomcic added.
As far as Krsko is concerned, Tomcic believes that this is somewhat
simpler. Croatia is being presented with several problems, one of
which is nuclear waste management.
Tomcic said he expected the Croatian government to consider these
problems and propose further steps to parliament.
