Tomcic said that Croatia's strategic determination to access the
European Union was not a barrier to develop relations with Russia.
He met with Russia's minister for emergency situations, Sergey
Shoygu, who is at the same time the co-chair of a combined Croatian-
Russian government commission.
The main topic of the talks with Shoygu was Russia's returning its
clearing debt to Croatia. Shoygu presented two proposals for Russia
to pay back its debt - that Russia involve itself in mine clearance
in Croatia and secondly to engage its fire fighting capacities to
assist Croatia in extinguishing fires.
Tomcic met with the president of the foreign affairs committee of
the Russian Duma, Dimitriy Rogozin, who informed his guest of the
activities in the Duma. The meeting further discussed
circumstances in the region.
Tomcic spoke with Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Ivanov
Matviyenko. She expressed Russia's interest to realise economic
projects in energetics (DruzbAdria), in shipbuilding,
construction and tourism.
There was talk of the possibility of goods exchange between the two
countries that could be as high as US$1 billion.
On Thursday, Tomcic spoke with his host, President of the Duma,
Genadiy Seleznyev and other Russian parliamentary officials.
