The Club sent a letter to the president of the strongest opposition
party, Ivo Sanader, stating the Club would use the money to increase
its fund for scholarships for talented students as well as awards
for Croatian scientists world-wide.
In the letter, the Club says that its programme was presented at the
First Croatian diaspora conference, held in Porec last month and
attended by representatives of the diaspora from all over the
world.
The Club has 23 committees, including one for youth, which the
letter says is in charge of caring for young Croats around the world
so that they might keep in touch with the mother country.
The Club's request refers to EUR1.5 million in the account of HDZ's
foundation which was temporarily blocked on June 6 on orders from
the State Prosecutor's Office. The ban on disposing with the money
came in the wake of suspicion that the money belongs to the state and
not the HDZ foundation given that these were funds which emigrants
donated to Croatia for the defence of the country a decade ago and
not to the HDZ party.
