ROME, May 29 (Hina) - The Italian town Bari has launched an
investigation into Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic due to
suspicion of conspiring with the Mafia to smuggle cigarettes. #L#
Italian agencies reported Wednesday that Bari mob prosecutor
Giuseppe Scelsi had launched an investigation against Djukanovic
and associates, based on a probe carried out by the anti-mob police
department. Djukanovic is under investigation on suspicion of
having conspired with the mob to smuggle cigarettes at the end of
the 1990s and the start of 2000.
Djukanovic and his associates were reportedly incriminated by
persons who have turned prosecutor's evidence, including a person
who took part in tobacco smuggling.
Before initiating the investigation, Scelsi had requested
information on whether Djukanovic was protected by immunity as a
head of state, and after having established that he was not, he
included the Montenegrin president into a list of persons under
investigation.
