ZAGREB, May 23 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Thursday discussed a final bill on the unique citizen identification number, submitted by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) bench. Under the bill, identification documents can include
the citizen identification number only if the number is protected by a code in order to protect the citizens' right to privacy.

During a debate, MPs pointed to the high cost of implementing the
law, but they agreed that changes in the citizen identification
number system were necessary, considering that the existing system
was inherited from the former country and was still used in all
former Yugoslav republics apart from Slovenia.
