As the first Austrian president who visited Croatia after it gained
its independence, Klestil on Thursday addressed Croatian MPs and
gave a speech on the future of Europe and the position of the
continent in the world of tomorrow.
"The multi-polar world of tomorrow will demand Europe's global
manner of thinking, a global policy of coordinating interests and
intensified cooperation in order to permanently eliminate war,
terror and violence and ensure peace and prosperity," Klestil
said.
Only a strong Europe can be an efficient partner at the global
level, the Austrian president said.
The expansion of the European Union, according to Klestil, is the
greatest challenge at the beginning of the third millennium.
He reiterated that he firmly believed that Europeans must create a
new Europe and joint future.
The Austrian President arrived in Zagreb on Wednesday for a three-
day return visit, at the invitation of Croatian President Stjepan
Mesic. In his speeches in the past Klestil pointed out that Austria
helped Croatia on its path to independence. The Austrian President
said his country was ready to help Croatia join European
associations.
Earlier today, Klestil held talks with the Croatian parliament
president, Zlatko Tomcic.
