Five or six of a total of 17 persons accused of war crimes by the
Hague tribunal are believed to be on Yugoslav territory but the
police were unable to establish the whereabouts of any of them,
Zivkovic said.
The interior minister, who is a member of the recently established
National Council for Cooperation with the Hague tribunal, said that
the Council approved 10 of 12 requests by the Hague tribunal to be
granted access to archives, at its first session last week. He added
that the documents the tribunal sought access to were mostly public
documents, such as court files.
"Not all such requests will be granted, including those on random
access to any archive. That is out of the question. Our legislation
defines that matter in a very modern way. We will provide assistance
for each specific request, but not without knowing all the facts.
There is nothing dangerous for national security in those archives.
However, I am certain that it is little likely that someone left
evidence of something such as a criminal act or a war crime in any of
the archives," Zivkovic said.
