The document prohibits involving children in armed conflicts and
obliges UN member countries to protect children by law from being
sold, child prostitution and pornography. The protocols are
considered to represent a significant step towards expanding
international legal protection for children, which amongst other
things was discussed at a special UN General Assembly session on
children.
The heads of some seventy countries or governments and other high
officials of UN member countries as well as non-government
organisations and 300 children discussed steps worth taking to
guarantee a better future for the young.
During the day, President Mesic met in UN headquarters with Sri
Lanka's president, Chandrik Bandaranaik, the current chair of the
Bosnian Presidency Beriz Belkic and Swedish Deputy Prime Minister
Hjelm-Wallen.
