A Croatian delegation will be headed by President Stjepan Mesic and
will participate in the session from May 8 to 10 which will be
dedicated to childrens' rights. It is expected that a ten year
global programme will be adopted regarding improvements to the
status of children in the world.
Vidovic told journalists that Croatia was currently conducting a
series of reforms which should increase the standard of protection
of children in Croatia and should bring them on par with
international standards.
Vidovic further announced amendments to the Labour Law, Employment
Law, Social Security Law and others and that the implementation of
the new laws would increase the quality of life for children and
families in Croatia. In July 2001 Croatia ratified Convention 182
of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on abolishing the
worst forms of labour for children.
Last month a law was adopted on confirming a facultative protocol in
addition to the Convention on Childrens' Rights and Participating
in Armed Conflicts as well as the sale of children, child
prostitution and child pornography, Vidovic said.
At the press conference, Vidovic presented a special brochure
entitled "Needs and Protection of Children in Croatia" which was
published by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security as part of
the preparations for Croatia's participation in the UN session on
childrens' rights.
