ZAGREB, April 23 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivica Racan called on
Radovan Ortynski on Tuesday to submit evidence on the connection
between state bodies and crime now, if he could not do so when he
held the office of chief state prosecutor, and thus contribute to a
more efficient prosecution of crime. #L#
During a visit to the Miroslav Krleza Lexicography Institute on the
occasion of World Book Day, Racan said that if Ortynski had
evidence, he should hand it over to the judiciary so that it could
prosecute what can be prosecuted and punish those who have to be if
they engaged in criminal activities.
The question remains why Ortynski was unable to do more during his
term in office, since that is the post where the biggest
contribution to the prosecution of crime can be made, said Racan.
Asked if he would appoint Ortynski deputy chief state prosecutor,
Racan said this was a matter which did not concern him or the
government, but the new chief state prosecutor and the bodies
deciding about people in the State Prosecutor's Office.
Asked to comment on Ortynski's claims that political figures
prevented him from combating crime more effectively, the PM said
the executive authority neither judged nor assessed if evidence was
sufficient for trial or not.
"One cannot justify their own impotence and incapability to
prosecute crime this way," said Racan.
