The purpose of the meeting was to formalise conclusions by heads of
state or government on ways to reduce the gap between rich and poor
countries.
Development assistance must be greater and better, UN Secretary-
General Kofi Annan said in his introductory speech. He reminded
that countries needed to ensure better management, healthy macro-
economic frameworks, and undisturbed access to markets and
international investors. One has to suppress corruption and
guarantee an equal division of the burden of financial crises, he
said. Developing countries must have a more important role in
economic decisions while the global monetary, financial and
trading systems must operate better and in a more harmonised
manner, Annan said.
The ECOSOC chairman, Croatian Ambassador Ivan Simonovic, said that
harmonising economic policies, mobilising all financial resources
and ensuring a more efficient and balanced use were vital for
removing poverty and ensuring sustainable development.
Croatian National Bank (HNB) deputy governor Boris Vujcic would
attend one of two round tables that are to be held within the ECOSOC
session.
