The assembly should elect the new leadership between two opposing
currents, one led by current party president Ivo Sanader and the
other by Ivic Pasalic.
On the eve of the event, a dispute erupted over credentials for
delegates, security, guests, organisers, and the media.
Briefing an extraordinary news conference on Saturday, general
secretary Joso Skara voiced fear there might be irregularities in
connection with the number of credentials. Besides 2,166
credentials for delegates, someone ordered another 250 for guests
and security without his knowledge.
Under the party's documents, the general secretary alone is
authorised for the take-over of credentials, Skara said. He did not
do so in this case dissatisfied with Sanader's decision to form a
"parallel body" for the task, with the president of the party's
Osijek-Baranja County branch, Branimir Glavas, at its helm.
Glavas told the same news conference Sanader authorised him to take
over the credentials. He said this was due to Skara's failure to
regularly brief Sanader about the preparations for the assembly.
Said Glavas, "Sanader has reason to suspect deliberate attempts at
obstruction are being made in order to cause trouble at the party
assembly," for which reason he appointed a commission for the take-
over of credentials.
