The President of the County Court Veljko Miskulin informed
reporters about Fazekas' testimony. Fazekas was employed in the
Risk Banking Section. After discovering of the embezzlements by
Nodilo and Podobnik, Fazekas resigned on March 20. She said that she
learned about the criminal affair on January 28 when a letter
arrived from the Croatian National Bank (HNB) which informed the
Board about an anonymous letter which brought attention to a 15
million dollar loss.
Fazekas described the events in the Rijecka Bank from the moment of
learning of the criminal act. According to Fazekas, Nodilo admitted
the bank losses amounting to about US$60 to 80 million and that he
had been operating in this manner for about the past four years. The
initial losses, according to Nodilo, were about US$300,000 and he
covered these up with false deposits by ledgering US$40 million. In
addition, he used short-term loans from foreign banks, Fazekas
explained.
According to Fazekas, internal audit established that the bank
suffered losses of US$103 million.
Eduard Nodilo and Snjezana Podobnik are currently in jail. The
detention to Podobnik expired today and so the judge issued a ruling
to extend it for a further 60 days.
