Not a single depositor has lost a lipa and the Rijecka Banka case
will not generate any additional costs for tax payers, Crkvenac
reiterated, adding that there would be no covering up of anybody's
responsibility for the scandal. The authorities are successfully
dealing with the problem, which has been proven by the great
interest of foreign partners in buying the bank, he said.
The Rijecka Banka case could have happened in any country,
including those with the longest banking tradition, such as Great
Britain, he said.
It is now evident that Rijecka Banka was not an organised bank, that
secret codes could be accessed easily and that internal control was
not up to the task as well as that persons lacking the necessary
qualifications could work in the foreign currency sector. Those
responsible for this must answer so that such a thing does not
happen again in Croatia's stable banking system, which I am sure
will remain stable, Crkvenac said in the statement.
The loss Rijecka Banka incurred in the fraud case totals USD98
million.
