RIJEKA, April 18 (Hina) - In continuation of the trial of the
"Gospic Group", at Rijeka County Court, colonel Milan Karic - a
military policeman in Gospic in 1991, said that the accused,
Stjepan Grandic fired at civilians on Lipova glavica, near
Gospic.#L#
Karic cited that he was called up along with another military
policeman to report to Grandic in Perusic. There Grandic told them
to secure the exchange of civilians and that they arrived on Lipova
glavica in their own private cars following a truck and a bus. There
they saw a group of civilians. A woman amongst them tried to pass on
a piece of paper. Grandic, as Karic claims, swore back at her and
began to fire. Karic said that he and the other military police then
went to their cars and returned to their base. He said that he did
not see anyone else fire but that there were some other people there
in camouflage uniforms.
Stjepan Grandic objected to Karic's testimony and said that Karic
headed the column towards Lipova glavica in a military vehicle and
after arriving and lining the civilians up he said, "now you all
have to shoot because you won't get back alive."
Grandic accused Karic of confiscating furniture from abandoned
homes in Gospic to furnish his flat.
