Physician by profession, was a leader of the Serb Democratic Party
(SDS) in Prijedor, and as president of the Prijedor Municipal
Assembly, and after Serb occupation of Prijedor president of the
Crisis Centre, Stakic allegedly participated in the ethnic
cleansing of the area.
Bosnian Moslems and Croats in the region were first severely and
widely attacked by Bosnian Serb troops. Those who did survive were
taken to concentration camps where many were tortured and killed,
the prosecution says.
Stakic has been kept in custody in The Hague for a little over a
year.
