said on Monday that the frequent appearance of irresponsible
headlines and the sensationalist interpretation of unauthorised
statements could permanently damage the stability of the Croatian
banking system and financial sector. #L#
Banking is based on trust that is built with great difficulty yet
easily shaken, the bankers said, noting that in recent years
Croatian banks have managed to put the crises behind them and once
again gain the trust of clients and depositors.
The HUB reminds that since its establishment it has continually
worked on raising the standard of banking business and bringing it
closer to the banking in the European Union, where Croatia has made
great progress and is ahead of some countries considered official
candidates for admission to the EU. Once a package of new laws (e.g.
on banking, trade in stocks and bonds, foreign currency
transactions, and the prevention of money laundering) is adopted,
the Croatian financial legislature will be completely harmonised
with EU regulations, the HUB said.
By using claims without arguments and sensationalist headlines
without any understanding of the structure of the problem and
competence can be very damaging and just confuses the public, the
HUB says.
The HUB therefore demands that before any article is published in
the press, a statement should be requested from the relevant
institution or person being referred to in the article.
