on Monday dismissed information on possible problems in another two
Croatian banks, saying the reports were unfounded. #L#
"I do not know where the information on possible problems in the
Commercial Bank Zagreb (PBZ) and the Splitska Banka came from, it is
completely unfounded," Tomcic said on Croatian Radio.
There is no danger of the Rijecka Banka scandal reoccurring in some
other bank, he said.
Tomcic described as unfortunate claims made by some officials on
possible problems in the baking sector and urged more caution when
addressing such matters.
Tomcic said that the scandal in Rijecka Banka could have been
prevented had there been quality control and a more adequate
response by the Croatian National Bank to anonymous reports on
suspicious dealings in the bank.
Tomcic believes that the price at which Rijecka Banka was sold is
good. The bank's sale does not mean the end of the investigation
into the circumstances of the scandal. The investigation must help
answer all questions, from the management's role to the quality of
internal control and whether the HNB could have prevented the
scandal by acting on time, he said.
