An investigation was launched in Italy over suspicions that someone
was bribed when Italy's Telecom bought a 29 percent interest in
Serbia's Telekom. It is believed that Milosevic was familiar with
the details of the EUR800 million deal, especially in view of the
fact that part of the money was used to pay state officials'
pensions and wages.
The investigation was launched by the prosecution of Turin, which
is the seat of the Italian Telecom. Several people were
interrogated, including Srdja Dimitrijevic, a Serbian businessmen
who brokered the deal. He said everything concerning the deal was
legal. Italy's Telecom allegedly paid EUR15 million to the Mak
Environment company for consulting services. The company, however,
is no longer registered with Macedonia's Economic Court, and while
it was, it was registered as dealing in cattle feed.
According to Corriere della sera, Milosevic consented to meeting
the Italian prosecutors tomorrow afternoon.
