In a statement on Serbian state television, Yugoslav President
Vojislav Kostunica called on the Yugoslav government to urge the
federal parliament to adopt a law on cooperation with the Hague-
based UN war crimes tribunal. He said it was "the only way to share
responsibility for the policy towards that tribunal."
Kostunica's demand was immediately dismissed by the president of
the federal parliament's Citizens Council, Dragoljub Micunovic,
who said he would not convene a session and put on the agenda a law
which had no chance of being passed.
Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic said on BK Television
that Yugoslavia was "practically under the regime of sanctions"
which would last until April 8 at least, when the United States
Congress is expected to decide whether Yugoslavia has met criteria
required for receiving further economic assistance.
"It's not a big tragedy but it would be very big if the country were
under such a regime for the next two, three or six months. We would
practically be back in the time we were in for almost two years, and
this is something nobody in this country must allow. The policy that
was led must not be repeated," said Svilanovic.
