RIJEKA, Feb 26 (Hina) - Milan Canic, an indictee in the trial against the "Gospic Group", charged with war crimes, has been released from detention to be allowed to defend himself from freedom. Judge Ika Saric, president of the trial
chamber at the Rijeka County Court, explained Canic's release at the suggestion of his attorney with the principle that the length one spends in detention should be in accordance with the punishment for the crime one is accused of and witness testimonies which have been favourable for Canic. A former organiser of Gospic's defence and member of the Crisis Centre, Canic was arrested in the central Croatian town last February. He was detained after being indicted for war crimes against civilians in Gospic in 1991. Tihomir Oreskovic, Ivica Rozic, Stjepan Grandic and Mirko Norac remain in custody.
