ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - The Croatian Police Union, embittered about the murder of police officer Milenko Vranjkovic, is demanding an urgent change to the Penal Code, Criminal Proceedings Law and the Law on Police, which "protect
criminals", while restricting police's use of fire weapons, the union's president, Dubravko Jagic, told a news conference on Wednesday. The union will also be demanding life-long sentences for the murder of police officers, and the harshest penalties for assault on police officers, Jagic said. He added that the current legal provisions placed police in "the second protection row when they are performing their duties and tasks". ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - The Croatian Police Union, embittered about
the murder of police officer Milenko Vranjkovic, is demanding an
urgent change to the Penal Code, Criminal Proceedings Law and the
Law on Police, which "protect criminals", while restricting
police's use of fire weapons, the union's president, Dubravko
Jagic, told a news conference on Wednesday.
The union will also be demanding life-long sentences for the murder
of police officers, and the harshest penalties for assault on
police officers, Jagic said. He added that the current legal
provisions placed police in "the second protection row when they
are performing their duties and tasks".
"Despite claims about the excess number of police officers, small
pays and bad laws protecting criminals, police once again showed
that it performed its duty conscientiously and completely, even for
the price of the police officer's life," Jagic said.
He asked how many more police officers should be killed so the
situation in the police would change, and asserted that things that
led to the death of policeman Milenko Vranjkovic must be changed.
The union asks that the Interior Ministry dismiss employees in
charge of preparing the police officers, holding them responsible
for the fact that the killed policeman did not have a bullet-proof
vest. The union also requests the dismissal of those responsible at
the Justice Ministry who released the killer, Srdjan Mladjan, from
Pozega's penitentiary over the weekend.
