MOSTAR, Feb 5 (Hina) - The unification of six municipal and one town
police departments in the southern Bosnian town of Mostar into one
single department was inaugurated on Tuesday.
The town's Croat and Muslim officials reached an agreement on the
unification of the police force last November.
Addressing the present, the head of the UN Mission to Bosnia,
Jacques Paul Klein, said the unification of the Mostar police would
contribute to a more effective combating of crime. He reminded this
was the first police unification in Herzegovina-Neretva Canton and
Mostar.
Klein also stated that many chances extended through international
economic assistance had been wasted due to obstructive politicians
and constant attempts at division.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign country whose borders will
not be changed, said Klein, adding separation and isolation was not
an option for any of Bosnia's three peoples. He called on Bosnia's
Croats to use all existing constitutional and democratic
mechanisms to exercise their legitimate needs.
Obstruction and isolation suit the interests of a small group of
leaders who have put personal interests above those of their
people, said Klein.
Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Interior Minister Goran Bilic said the
unification of the Mostar police was an attempt to eradicate
terrorism. Possible attempts to destabilise the police force in
Mostar and Herzegovina-Neretva Canton will fail, he added.
