UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES RISE IN JANUARY

ZAGREB, Feb 15 (Hina) - A total of 411,100 job-seekers registered with the Croatian Employment Bureau in late January, which is a four percent increase as against the month before (16,000 unemployed) and a 6.5% increase as against last January (24,900 unemployed). There are several reasons for this unexpected increase in the number of unemployed. One of them is an increase in the number of unemployed soldiers, who have registered with the Bureau in order to be able to exercise their rights from the new law on soldiers. The number of unemployed soldiers was continually decreasing between February and November 2001. Last December it increased by 2,500 and this January by another 5,700. Another cause of the unexpected rise in unemployment is the fact that around 2,400 seasonal construction workers, who found temporary employment in the period between October and January, have again registered with the B

One of them is an increase in the number of unemployed soldiers, who have registered with the Bureau in order to be able to exercise their rights from the new law on soldiers. The number of unemployed soldiers was continually decreasing between February and November 2001. Last December it increased by 2,500 and this January by another 5,700. Another cause of the unexpected rise in unemployment is the fact that around 2,400 seasonal construction workers, who found temporary employment in the period between October and January, have again registered with the Bureau. The number of those who lost their jobs because their employers stopped working increased as well, totalling 2,161 in January. According to the Bureau's monthly bulletin, 33,600 new job-seekers registered with the Bureau in January, which is a 30% increase as against last January. A total of 10,200 persons found employment in January, which is a 19.6% increase as against last January. Most of them found temporary employment (7,500 or 73.4%). Of this number, 2,300 (23.7%) found jobs in wholesale and retail trade and the repair of motor vehicles and household appliances, while 2,000 (22.5%) found employment in the processing industry. Employers announced 16,400 vacancies with the Bureau in January, which is 24.9% more than last January. According to reports on signed work contracts that were sent to employment bureau offices, 11,300 persons found employment in January, which is 60.6% more than in January last year. Unemployment has risen in all counties, with the exception of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, which saw a 4.6% drop in unemployment (23,945 unemployed). Sisak-Moslavina County has seen the highest increase in unemployment figures - 17.1% or 21,903 unemployed. Unemployment figures are the highest in the capital Zagreb, which has 53,892 jobless, an 8.9% increase as against last January, and Split-Dalmatia County, which has 51,587 unemployed, a 2.9% rise as against last year.
