ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - According to the government personnel
commission's list, of 182 officials in the Croatian government,
there is an equal number of those declaring themselves as not
belonging to any party and those who claim their party affiliation,
while only a few remain undeclared.
Of 182 officials in the government, ranging from the premier to
ministry secretaries, 23 are from the Croatian Social Liberal Party
(HSLS), 22 from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), 13 from the
Croatian Peasants' Party, five from the Croatian Democratic Union,
four from the Croatian People's Party and three from the Liberal
Party.
The rest are either not affiliated with any party or did not claim
their party affiliation.
Most government officials, 78 of them, declared themselves as not
belonging to any party.
A total of 24 officials did not state their party affiliation, while
four are holding the positions of assistant ministers according to
an agreement on national representation.
Among the 182 government officials are the premier, his deputy and
assistants, ministers, their deputies and assistants, and the
government and ministry secretaries.
The higher the posts, the higher the party representation, with the
exception of the Tourism Ministry and the European Integration
Ministry where nobody is in any party, from ministers to
secretaries.
One assistant each from the ministries of finance, culture,
education and sports, and labour and social welfare, as well the
secretary at the Environmental Protection and Zoning Ministry
declared themselves as members of the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ), the strongest opposition party.
The list of government officials was updated prior to announced
negotiations in the ruling coalition on possible government
personnel changes in the wake of recent changes in the HSLS
leadership.
Each of the coalition's five parties states they are under-
represented in the government, and that they did not insist on
having exclusively their members appointed to high and, for
Croatia, well-paid posts.
Premier Ivica Racan has said several times he has been criticised by
his SDP for, judging by the number of SDP members in the government,
not actually taking over power.
