PARLIAMENT BINDS GOVT. TO DRAFT REPORT ON INTELLIGENCE SERVICES

ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament, ending its 19th session Thursday, entrusted the government with submitting a report within three months on the work of intelligence services from 1995 to the present day. The Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) bench, in agreement with most benches, dropped a proposal for the establishment of a parliamentary commission which would probe into the legality of the work of intelligence services, particularly files on the tailing and wiretapping of 650 public figures. Instead, the MPs adopted a conclusion by which the parliament binds the government to draw up a report on the work of intelligence services, based on reports by intelligence services and competent ministries, from the passing of a law on the UNS (National Security Office) in 1995 to the present and submit it to the parliament within three months. Only the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) bench opposed the proposal. On behalf of the bench, Ivan Jarnjak said it was not logical to demand from intelligence services to examine the legality of their own work. Only a parliamentary commission of inquiry could do this, the establishment of which, he believes, is necessary in order to remove "harsh qualifications made against the late President (Franjo) Tudjman and the HDZ leadership".
