RUPEL SAYS NEW MARITIME CODE REAFFIRMS SLOVENIA'S RIGHTS

LJUBLJANA, Dec 22 (Hina) - Slovenia's Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said on Sunday that amendments to the Slovene Maritime Code were not in violation of international law.
LJUBLJANA, Dec 22 (Hina) - Slovenia's Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said on Sunday that amendments to the Slovene Maritime Code were not in violation of international law.#L# "The decision of our parliament is a proper one. It is not interference in Croatian affairs, but on the contrary, it reaffirms our right and position as a Mediterranean, Adriatic and maritime country," Rupel said at the Brezje shrine where he was attending mass ahead of Slovenia's Independence Day. Rupel was quoted by Slovene television as confirming that he had met newly-nominated Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul, but declined to give details of the meeting. Slovene media report that Ljubljana will study and respond to a Croatian diplomatic note, which said that proclamation of a new maritime code by Slovenia, in which it would renounce its position as "a geographically disadvantaged country" without access to open seas, might result in encroachment on territory under Croatian sovereignty. They say it was the last note by the outgoing administration in Croatia and expect new bilateral talks on delimitation on the sea. (Hina) vm
