MINISTER HOPES THERE WON'T BE REVANCHISM IN NEW INTERIOR MINISTRY

RIJEKA, Dec 16 (Hina) - Interior Minister Sime Lucin told reporters in Rijeka on Tuesday he hoped there would be no revanchism at the ministry with the impending change of government. #L# If that happens, it will be a sign that politics are about to interfere with the police once again, Lucin said, adding that he was not referring to the expected change of minister and his assistants. Lucin said he would present the new minister with a 180-page report on Interior Ministry performance over the past four years. He said the report would certainly make his successor's work easier, and added that he did not receive one upon stepping into office. Outlining the results of the Interior Ministry reform, Lucin said the staff had been downsized to about 3,700 between the start of 2000 and October this year, which he added had resulted in an ideal number of police per inhabitants and the number of crimes. The level of expertise and skills has been raised and every officer has graduated from secondary school, Lucin said, adding that administration staff had also been reduced, resulting in a smaller, more efficient, more mobile system which cost the budget much less than before. Lucin said the number of the gravest crimes was constantly declining and the rate of solving them was up. Between 96 and 98 percent of murders get solved, and 11 murders on which police had been working on for several years were solved over the past four years, he added. (hina) ha sb
