taking Croatia into the European Union, President Stjepan Mesic
said in an interview with the Catholic monthly Puls. #L#
"The pace at which we will be drawing closer to the EU depends on
us," Mesic said adding that the new authorities had great chances in
this field "as Croatia is no longer an isolated country".
Mesic said the new authorities could carry out this task if they
complied with international obligations and improved living
standards.
The head of state said he would co-operate with the new foreign
minister, regardless of who would hold that post, and he expected
the new foreign minister to continue carrying out the policy which
would introduce Croatia into the EU.
Asked whether he believed that the new authorities would follow his
advice in economy to a greater extent, Mesic said he would like to
see that happen.
"Judging by my first meetings with Premier-Designate Ivo Sanader, I
think that we will have a good cooperation in that field," Mesic
said.
He said he was not afraid of possible unrest in the country which
might be provoked by new indictments from the UN war crimes tribunal
in The Hague as "Croatia has overcome the resistance towards the
tribunal".
