MESIC SAYS CROATIAN AUTHORITIES DON'T KNOW WHERE GOTOVINA IS

SARAJEVO, Dec 6 (Hina) - The Croatian authorities do not know where retired general Ante Gotovina is, and the moment he becomes available Croatia will meet its obligations towards the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in an interview published by Banja Luka daily Nezavisne Novine on Saturday.
#L# Mesic said he did not have personal contacts with Gotovina, but with persons who had spoken to the fugitive general. "He (Gotovina) said he recognises the institution of the Hague tribunal as well as Croatian institutions and that the former Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) rule did not allow him to speak to ICTY investigators," Mesic said. Mesic said he advocated that Gotovina be enabled to speak to ICTY investigators in Zagreb. If the investigators are not happy with that then Gotovina will go to The Hague. Asked if the new HDZ rule would obstruct cooperation with the Hague tribunal, Mesic said no. Reiterating the HDZ today is different from the 1990 HDZ, Mesic said the party needed to prove this with concrete acts because any form of non-cooperation with the Hague would only cause damage to Croatia.
