ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday adopted
amendments to the framework agreement on the construction of a
Bregana-Zagreb-Dubrovnik highway it had signed with the Bechtel
company, Public Works Minister Radimir Cacic told reporters. #L#
Cacic said that Croatia now no longer had any obligations towards
Bechtel regarding the construction of the Zagreb-Sisak highway and
that it would face no consequences or material damage because of
it.
The agreement with Bechtel was signed in 1998 and it envisaged the
construction of three highway sections, including the Zagreb-Sisak
section which was to run further towards the border with Bosnia-
Herzegovina. However, construction works on the section were
suspended a year later, after which the construction of the Zagreb-
Sveti Rok section started.
The amendments removed the Zagreb-Sisak section from the agreement
altogether, but left open the possibility of building any other
section instead under conditions defined by the framework
agreement and provided the government and Bechtel reach agreement
on it before the completion of works on the Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok
section.
The deadline for the completion of the section was moved from 2006
to June next year.
The shortened deadline will cost the Croatian Highways company an
additional 20 million dollars, the amount that has already been
secured, Cacic said.
