BELGRADE, Dec 9 (Hina) - Former Yugoslav People's Army general Pavle Strugar said on Tuesday he would discontinue his hospital treatment so that he could travel to The Hague on Friday to stand trial for war crimes committed in Croatia's Dubrovnik in 1991. #L# Strugar said in a statement to Beta news agency he wished to "stop the polemic surrounding his departure for the trial before the Hague tribunal," which he added had never been in question. He said he had been unable to act on the tribunal's request that he return because he started his treatment before the summons arrived. Strugar surrendered voluntarily in November 2001 and was released that December 1 pending trial after the then Yugoslav as well as Montenegro's government guaranteed that he would return to The Hague when summonsed. The start of the trial, initially scheduled for tomorrow, has been postponed due to his failure to show up, Beta said. (hina) ha sb
