The event, which began on Saturday, was organised by Croatia's
Office for the Prevention of Drug Abuse in cooperation with
Slovenia's Office for Drugs.
Opening the conference, Croatia's Health Minister Andro Vlahusic
called on all countries in the region to bolster ties in combating
drug trafficking.
He recalled Croatia had adopted new legal legislation pertaining to
drug abuse prevention, become the regional centre in the fight
against AIDS, and carried out a successful anti-smoking campaign.
The Office for the Prevention of Drug Abuse has data indicating that
80 percent of pupils in Croatia experiment with narcotics, Office
head Bernardica Juretic said, adding that over 80 percent of heroin
intended for Western Europe passed through Southeast Europe.
One of the currently biggest problems are designer drugs because
they are easy to smuggle, while heroin trafficking is currently on
the decline owing to the situation in Afghanistan, it was said.
About 70 participants in the conference will also discuss legal and
institutional frameworks for drug abuse prevention, the treatment,
rehabilitation and resocialisation of addicts, and regional
cooperation in this field.
