Damir Bacinovic of the Croatian Union of Metal Workers (SMH), who
heads the strike committee, said Economy Minister Ljubo Jurcic had
given him strong assurances today that workers would receive
overdue wages next week, which was why work resumed.
The government decided yesterday it would no longer fund the ailing
shipyard and suggested the management file for bankruptcy. The
amount of US$1.8 million from an investment loan will be used to pay
wages for July, August, September, and October.
The SMH supports the government's decision, Bacinovic said, adding
he hoped the establishment of the Viktor Lenac Undergoing
Bankruptcy Proceedings company would enable workers to keep their
jobs.
