VARAZDIN, Nov 27 (Hina) - The head of the Croatian People's Party
(HNS) Central Committee and newly-elected parliamentary deputy
from constituency no. 3, Radimir Cacic, said at a news conference on
Thursday that "there were no true winners at (Sunday's) elections".

Cacic believes that chances of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
forming a coalition with the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) are
realistic, which he said would not be enough for a government
majority, but would be close to it.
If no such agreement is reached, "the HDZ's thirst for power could
lead to a coalition with the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP), which
would definitely be disastrous for Croatia and push it back into the
Balkans", Cacic said, adding that a new election was also one of the
options.
"Forming a coalition with the HDZ is out of the question for the HNS,
but we will not refuse cooperation which is in line with Croatia's
interests," Cacic said, adding that his statement about a possible
coalition with the HDZ was misinterpreted by the media.
Among other things, Cacic said that with almost 30 percent of the
vote in Varazdin, the HNS was the strongest political option in that
town and that "it is clear that most citizens have recognised the
party's civic and liberal political position".
"It is not surprising that the residents of Varazdin have opted for
it, because it reflects the level of the city's development, the way
of thinking and education of its residents, their work habits and
the fact that they belong to the European community", Cacic said.
"The HNS will be strengthened through the application of the
Varazdin model, and I personally aspire to the position of premier,
when the time for that comes," Cacic said.
