During a special session, held on this occasion in the city hall,
Mayor Bozidar Kalmeta (a member of the Croatian Democratic Union,
HDZ), told those present that "after a successful defence and the
establishment of the independent Republic of Croatia, Zadar became
one of the most successful cities in the country".
The city assembly chairman, Davor Aras, welcomed the gathering and
hailed Zadar's honorary citizen, retired General Ante Gotovina,
"no matter where he is now". After that the members of the assembly
and guests chanted "Ante, Ante".
Gotovina's whereabouts have been unknown since the UN war crimes
tribunal issued an indictment against him in 2001.
