ZAGREB, Nov 18 (Hina) - A committee for the erection of a monument to
the homeland has applauded a proposal to put the monument up in
Zagreb's Stjepan Radic Square, although two Homeland War
associations object. #L#
The proposal to erect the monument in Stjepan Radic Square was
unanimously made by the Culture Ministry's Council for Urban
Planning.
Most of the committee members agreed on Tuesday the location is
ideal and unique, seeing as it is in the centre of the capital, links
Zagreb's past and future, Mount Sljeme and Sava River, and is
surrounded by the National University Library and the Vatroslav
Lisinski concert hall.
A representative of the Association of Homeland War Widows, Irena
Dubreta, said, however, the Association felt the monument should be
erected in Vukovar, which she added symbolised Croatia's
resistance to Greater Serbia aggression.
Prime Minister Ivica Racan said the committee session was
deliberately convened today, Remembrance Day for Vukovar's Victims
of 1991.
One should be more pious and less political today, said Racan, at
whose invitation the committee paid homage with a minute of silence
to all Vukovar victims and all soldiers killed in the Homeland War.
