UNION: GOVT. DIDN'T HAVE UNDERSTANDING FOR PHYSICIANS' REQUESTS

ZAGREB, Nov 17 (Hina) - The Croatian Union of Physicians (HLS) has called on citizens to bear in mind when going to the polls that the incumbent government did not have understanding for physicians' requests and the solution of accumulated problems in the health sector. #L# "We do not want to advocate any political option, but to inform citizens that we did not reach agreement with the incumbent government on any issue in the past four years," said HLS president Ivica Babic, stressing that he was speaking on behalf of all Croatian physicians. The government's term of office was marked by inefficient management of the health sector, untransparent funding, and disregard for the medical profession. In mid-January this year, the HLS organised a month-long walk-out, demanding an increase in salaries of more than 40 percent and the signing of a collective work agreement, which the government ended by adopting a decision ordering all physicians to go back to work. If it fails to reach agreement with the new government, the union will organise a referendum among its members and decide about further measures, Babic said. (hina) rml sb
