HVAR, Oct 30 (Hina) - The Croatian Bishops' Conference on Thursday
released a message for the faithful and all people of good will on
the occasion of upcoming parliamentary elections, urging them to
vote with great moral and social awareness and responsibility, in
order to effectively contribute to Croatia's development. #L#
The platforms of individuals and parties should be judged by
whether they promote justice for all, notably for the most
disadvantaged, if they are building a society characterised by
solidarity, and if they have a sense of and understanding for
tolerance, unity, forgiveness and reconciliation, reads the
message.
Also important in current circumstances is a positive attitude --
not necessarily uncritical -- towards national history and
heritage, the protection of the Croatian people's rights and
dignity in world politics, and gratitude to those who made the
biggest sacrifice for Croatia's freedom, the bishops say.
"An unavoidable criterion is an uncompromising and consistent war
on drugs which are increasingly destroying our youth, and thus our
future," says the message, which also warns that the faithful do not
vote for parties and individuals advocating legalising abortion,
euthanasia, and "unnatural same-sex marriages".
The priorities to be voted for include the spiritual and moral
renaissance of society, removing the legacy of a totalitarian
system and the imposed war, care for the poor and weak, combating
demographic extinction by extending more assistance to married
couples and families, promoting an integral education of children
and youth, encouraging agriculture, maritime affairs and the
balanced development of the entire country, environmental
protection and the preservation of national wealth, reinforcing
democracy and the legal order, connecting Croats at home and
abroad, nurturing national identity and culture in times of all-
round globalisation, and preparing the country for entering the
European Union and other world structures.
The bishops conclude by calling on all who have offices in the
Church not to use their premises and services for the promotion of
individual political parties, and to urge the faithful to pray for
concord and Croatia's progress.
