ZAGREB, Nov 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on
Sunday night slammed statements by senior officials of the Social
Democratic Party (SDP) about yesterday's attack on SDP officials at
an election rally in the southern town of Imotski, describing them
as imputations introducing harsh words in the election campaign.

Speaking at an election rally yesterday, SDP leader Ivica Racan
said that the HDZ and its leader Ivo Sanader were responsible for
yesterday's assault on SDP candidates Slavko Linic and Marin
Jurjevic in Imotski.
Racan said that Linic and Jurjevic had not only eggs thrown at them,
but glasses as well. He added Linic left the scene of the accident
with a bloody head and that the attackers were prevented from
injuring him with an ashtray.
He said the attackers had been spurred by "Sanader's speech
yesterday, when he labelled the SDP candidates as people who were
coming to destroy Split and Dalmatia".
Responding to the criticism, the HDZ issued a statement, expressing
regret at the incident. It said that Linic and Jurjevic had thrown a
number of utterly insulting accusations at the HDZ and its
president Sanader, instead of commenting on the incident in a
civilised and stoic manner, as done in western democracies.
Such statements do not contribute to the quality of the election
campaign, but only introduce hate language, the party said, calling
for a fair election campaign.
