ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - Compared to the 2000 elections, 120 more candidacies have been submitted for the November 23 parliamentary ballot, and there is a higher number of parties, coalitions, and independent slates, the State Electoral Commission (DIP) said on Wednesday, publishing the slates it accepted. #L# The DIP has received 403 candidacies, vice president Jakob Miletic said. A total of 5,119 candidates are running in the election, including 3,839 men and 1,280 women. The average age of the candidates is 46, with men 47 women 43. The youngest male candidate, Ivan Mocan, and the youngest female candidate, Ivana Rubcic, were born in 1985, while the oldest among men, Ivo Parokovic, was born in 1917, and the oldest among women, Ana Jana Grubor, was born in 1919. Sixty-four party and 50 independent slates have been submitted in 11 constituencies. The highest number of candidacies -- a total of 40 slates -- has been submitted in constituency No. One, which covers central Zagreb, while the lowest number -- 23 slates -- has been submitted in constituency No. 11, the one for the diaspora. Forty-three candidacies have been submitted for constituency No. 12, which elects ethnic minority MPs, including slates by 35 political parties and ethnic minority associations, one coalition slate, and seven independent candidacies. Constituency No. Three, which covers Varazdin-Medjimurje County, has the youngest candidates, with the average age being 44, while constituency No. 12 has the oldest -- 51-year-old on average. The DIP did not accept the independent slates of Vinko Maretic, Damir Krstulovic, and Marijan Curcija because they were submitted after the deadline set by law. The DIP did not accept the slate of the Green 2003 party either, because it was not registered as a political party when the decision on the polls was published in the Official Gazette on October 20. So far, accreditation has been given to 22 foreign and 1,917 domestic observers, said Miletic. He recalled that complaints about the published slates could be submitted from midnight today, when the official election campaign begins. (hina) ha sb
