THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Nov 2 (Hina) - A peace mediator of the European
Union in the former Yugoslavia from 1992 to 1995, Lord David Owen,
will take the witness stand in the Milosevic trial before the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
on Monday and Tuesday. #L#
Lord Owen will appear as a witness of the trial chamber which
subpoenaed him to testify on 3 and 4 November at the trial of former
Serbian and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
Lord Owen, who previously refused to be a prosecution witness
justifying his move as an effort to preserve his image as an
unbiased peace mediator, will speak about his term as a co-chairman
of the International Conference on Former Yugoslavia, his meetings
with the defendant and other leaders of the then Yugoslavia,
Bosnian and Croatian Serb leaders and their connections with
Milosevic.
The basis for the Briton's testimony is likely to be a written
statement he forwarded to the tribunal. The statement is based, to a
great extent, on his book entitled 'Balkan Odyssey'.
Lord Owen, Foreign Secretary during the Labour government in the
1977-79 period, succeeded Lord Peter Carrington at the post of the
EU peace mediator for the former Yugoslavia in September 1992. He
left this post in June 1995 when he was replaced by Carl Bildt.
