BELGRADE, Oct 23 (Hina) - The EU High Representative for the Common
Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, said in Belgrade on
Thursday Europe was the only path for Serbia-Montenegro (SCG) and
that on that road, cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal
was unavoidable. #L#
The only path SCG has is to Europe because it is what the majority of
the people want and what most Europeans want, he told reporters
after talks with Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic on the
resumption of Belgrade-Pristina negotiations, relations within
SCG, and internal affairs in Serbia.
Speaking of the resumption of Belgrade-Pristina negotiations,
Solana agreed with Zivkovic that the make-up of future working
groups must be balanced and constructive.
Solana said the make-up which attended recent talks in Vienna must
not be allowed again given that the Kosovo delegation did not
include representatives of either ethnic communities or the
government and other institutions and parties, only one from Kosovo
President Ibrahim Rugova's party.
After talks with SCG President Svetozar Markovic, Solana said it
was necessary to reach a national consensus and agreement on the
joint objectives of SCG's road to the European Union.
Marovic said SCG should not become a "hostage to trials at the Hague
tribunal," and that "the latest developments should not undermine
the road to the EU".
Tonight Solana is due to meet Montenegrin PM Milo Djukanovic and
then depart for Pristina.
