ZAGREB, Oct 6 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Monday
forwarded a message offering his best wishes to all Croatian
citizens on the occasion of Independence Day, which Croatia
celebrates on October 8. #L#
Independence Day is marked in memory of the fateful times twelve
years ago, when Croatia, after realising that it would not be able
to survive in the former federation, severed constitutional
relations with the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia with a
decision adopted by its parliament, and embarked on the path of
independence, reads the message.
After remembering the Homeland War and Croatia's victory in it,
Mesic went on to say that Croatia was facing the challenges of
meeting all assumed commitments and creating conditions for
joining the EU. Admission to the EU is Croatia's strategic goal and
a precondition for its economic and social development, Mesic
repeated.
Parliament President Zlatko Tomcic also forwarded an Independence
Day message.
On 8 October 1991, the Croatian parliament, acting in line with the
will of Croatian citizens, expressed in a plebiscite, adopted a
historic decision to sever all constitutional relations with
former federation's republics, Tomcic wrote in the message.
