ROME, Oct 3 (Hina) - Italy, in its capacity as chair of the European
Union presidency, has expressed concern over the intention by the
Croatian government to present a proposal in parliament to declare
an exclusive ecological and fishing zone in the Adriatic Sea, the
Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. #L#
Italy, which has always agreed on the need to protect the Adriatic
and explore, along with all interested countries and relevant
European institutions, common modalities of protecting the
Adriatic, reaffirms its opposition to any unilateral initiative
that would not conform to the European principle of regional
cooperation and pursuit of negotiated solutions, the statement
said.
The statement expressed hope that Croatia's commitment to European
integration processes, which Italy supports, would lead Croatian
authorities to avoid any decision that might cause tension.
