LJUBLJANA, Sept 24 (Hina) - Italy is against unilateral moves in the Adriatic and Croatia's intention to proclaim an exclusive economic zone will cause damage to Italian fishermen, Paolo Scarpa, undersecretary at the Italian
agriculture ministry in charge of fisheries, told Slovene television on Wednesday evening.
LJUBLJANA, Sept 24 (Hina) - Italy is against unilateral moves in the
Adriatic and Croatia's intention to proclaim an exclusive economic
zone will cause damage to Italian fishermen, Paolo Scarpa,
undersecretary at the Italian agriculture ministry in charge of
fisheries, told Slovene television on Wednesday evening. #L#
"In political terms, this would not be a positive move," said Scarpo
adding that if such a move was looked at from the point of view of
economy it was very detrimental to Italy's fishery.
The Italian official, who met his Slovene counterpart Joza Sterle
last week, denied that Italy had negotiated with Croatia about a
special agreement which would enable Italian fishermen to catch
fish in Croatian waters.
Slovene television said Italy advocated a coalition of countries
which would promote unique Mediterranean characteristics at the
upcoming conference in Venice.
According to Scarpa, Croatia and Italy agree that there is a need to
protect the Adriatic by establishing fishing zones as proposed by
the European Commission.
